جزيرة سترة هي أحد أكبر جزر البحرين مساحةً وتقع في شرق مملكة البحرين وقد سميت سترة بهذا الأسم و ذلك لأن النخيل قد سترتها من كل جانب، وتعتبر جزيرة سترة هي أول من قام بافتتاح مراكز تحفيظ القرآن الكريم منذ قرون قديمة جداً.

قدمت سترة أشهر علماء الدين البحرينين الذي بنوا مساجداً منذ القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر وما زالت هذه المساجد موجودة ومن بينها مسجد أبو عمير المعلم ومسجد العم حبيل والذي ختم فيه القرآن عدد من شخصيات البلد من بينها الشيخ عيسى بن سلمان آل خليفة حاكم البلاد السابق وابنه الملك حمد بن سلمان آل خليفة ملك البحرين الحالي.

سترة تعتبر من أهم المدن حيوية في البحرين لإحتوائها على الكثير من مصانع البحرين ومعارض السيارات، ويمكن ان تعتبر جزيرة سترة هي الحزام الصناعي للبحرين .

كما أن الديانة الرسمية في سترة تنقسم إلى: الغالبية العظمى هم من الشيعة إذ يمثلون حوالي 95% من السكان الأصليين، والنسبة الباقية هي من السنة، ولكنهم يعيشون في وئام وتحابب ولا توجد أي مشاكل طائفية تذكر.

ويقصد عادة بلفظ سترة : بجميع القرى التي فيها مثل : مهزة ، واديان ، القرية ، أبو العيش ، سفالة ، الخارجية ... الخ .

 القرى

توجد في جزيرة سترة سبع قرى هي:

• واديان وهي أكبرهم،
• الخارجية (الصالونة)،
• مركوبان،
• القُريّة،
• مهزّة،
• سفالة،
• أبو العيش وتقع في قرية أبو العيش معظم مراكز سترة الخدمية (مكتبة سترة العامّة ونادي سترة الثقافي والرياضي ومستشفى سترة ومستشفى الولادة وسوق سمك سترة ومركز شرطة سترة ومقبرة سترة والمدارس الإبتدائية والإعدادية والثانوية).

بالإضافة إلى وجود منطقة صناعية شمال سترة وأخرى في الجنوب تسمى حلة أم البيض، ويوجد بالجزيرة شارع رئيسي تجاري حوله محال تجارية مكونين منطقة تجارية تسمى الحمرية ومعظم معارض السيارات في البحرين توجد بهذه المنطقة.

There is a massive land reclamation project called East Sitra which increased the island size by 50% and became the site of a new city.

 الاقتصاد

The island's economy used to be based on agriculture and fishing. The northern section of the island has been turned into an industrial area. Bapco oil storage reservoirs are located in the south. Sitra is also the terminus of the 42-km Dhahran-Sitra natural gas pipeline, which connects it to Dahran in Saudi Arabia.

Several car and furniture showrooms also make up the new development on the island. The Sitra Club is a cultural and sports club for the island.

Today Sitra handles Bahrain's entire petroleum production. It is the location of Port of Sitra. It is also the export center for the oil fields in northeastern Saudi Arabia.

 التعليم

Sitra is the site of many school campuses such as Al Noor International School and Indian School, Bahrain. The Applied Science University is also located here.

 النقل

The Sitra Causeway connects the north of the island to Nabih Saleh and to Umm al Hussam (Manama) on Bahrain Island. Two small bridges on the south west of Sitra also join Bahrain Island, near the villages of Ma'ameer and Eker.

 الإدارة

The southern part of the island belongs to Southern Governorate and the northern part to Capital Governorate. Between 1990 and 2013 it was part of Central Governorate of Bahrain, but that has since been dissolved. Between 1920 and 1990 it was part of Sitra Municipality.

 بلدية سترة

This was a municipality in Bahrain before they were re-organized as Governorates. The Sitra Municipality consisted of the island of Sitra and three villages close to it on the main island of Bahrain: Ma'ameer, Eker and Nuwaidrat.
