العصر البطولي لاستكشاف القطب الجنوبي Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration كان حقبةً من استكشاف قارة أنتارتيكا بدأت في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، وانتهت بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى؛ وغالبًا ما يؤرخ المؤرخون الفاصل بين العصرين «البطولي» و«الميكانيكي» ببعثة Shackleton–Rowett Expedition في الفترة 1921–1922.[1][2][3]

خلال العصر البطولي، أصبحت المنطقة القطبية الجنوبية محورًا لجهود دولية أسفرت عن استكشاف علمي وجغرافي مكثف نفذته 17 بعثة استكشافية رئيسية إلى أنتارتيكا أُطلقت من عشر دول.[4] وكان العامل المشترك بين هذه البعثات محدودية الموارد المتاحة لها قبل أن تؤدي التطورات في تقنيات النقل والاتصالات إلى إحداث ثورة في أعمال الاستكشاف.[1][5] ولذلك أصبحت كل بعثة منها اختبارًا للتحمل، اختبر الحدود الجسدية والنفسية لأفرادها، وتجاوزها أحيانًا. وقد أُطلق عليها لاحقًا وصف «البطولية» تقديرًا للمحن التي كان على هؤلاء الرواد التغلب عليها، إذ لم ينجُ بعضهم من التجربة؛ فقد توفي ما مجموعه 22 عضوًا من أعضاء البعثات خلال هذه الفترة.

تم الوصول إلى القطب الجنوبي الجغرافي والقطب الجنوبي المغناطيسي لأول مرة خلال العصر البطولي. وكان تحقيق السبق في الوصول إلى القطب الجنوبي الجغرافي الهدف الرئيسي للعديد من البعثات، كما كان المبرر الوحيد لرحلة رولد أموندسن التي أصبحت أول بعثة تصل إليه عام 1911. واستهدفت بعثات أخرى أهدافًا مختلفة في مناطق متباينة من القارة. ونتيجة لهذا النشاط، اكتُشف جزء كبير من سواحل القارة ورُسمت خرائطه، واستُكشفت مناطق واسعة من داخلها. كما أنتجت البعثات كميات كبيرة من البيانات العلمية في طيف واسع من التخصصات، واستمر فحصها وتحليلها في إشغال المجتمعات العلمية في العالم لعقود.[6]

كان استكشاف أقصى جنوب الكرة الأرضية موضع اهتمام متقطع لقرون سبقت العصر البطولي، إلا أن العزلة الشديدة للمنطقة، إلى جانب مناخها القاسي وبحارها الخطرة، فرضت صعوبات عملية هائلة على تقنيات الملاحة البحرية المبكرة. وبعد نحو قرن من عصر الاستكشاف، أصبح المستكشف البريطاني جيمس كوك أحد أوائل المستكشفين المعروفين الذين سافروا إلى المنطقة. وقد غيّرت اكتشافات رحلته الثانية (1772–1775) خريطة العالم إلى الأبد.[7] وقبل هذه الرحلة، كان يُعتقد أن قارةً كبيرة تُعرف باسم الأرض الجنوبية تشغل معظم نصف الكرة الجنوبي. واكتشف كوك عدم وجود مثل هذه الكتلة الأرضية، إلا أن الجليد البحري الكثيف حال دون وصوله إلى أنتارتيكا نفسها.[7] وفي أثناء ذلك، أصبحت رحلته أول رحلة مسجلة تعبر الدائرة القطبية الجنوبية. وقد افترض، استنادًا إلى كمية الجليد، أنه لا بد من وجود كتلة أرضية ينشأ منها هذا الجليد، لكنه كان مقتنعًا بأن هذه الأرض، إن كانت موجودة، تقع في أقصى الجنوب بحيث لا تصلح للسكن أو تكون ذات قيمة اقتصادية.[7] وبعد ذلك، توقّف استكشاف المناطق الجنوبية من العالم.
