قالب:Infobox Australian place/doc

Purpose

{{Infobox Australian place}} is used to add infoboxes to articles on places in Australian states and territories. It is not limited to populated places such as cities, towns and suburbs, but may be used on any place including regions, local government areas, cadastral units and some areas that do not fall into any of the preceding descriptions and for which no other infobox is appropriate. It is the standard infobox used in Australian articles. Australian articles using {{Infobox settlement}} directly should be converted to use this infobox.

This template once supported use for protected areas such as national parks. This is no longer the case, please use {{Infobox protected area}} instead.

The infobox has been extensively customised for Australia and includes automation that results in some parameters being redundant to other parameters. For example, if population density (in the |density= parameter) is not specified, this will be automatically generated based on the |pop= and |area= parameters. It is therefore important to read parameter descriptions thoroughly, to avoid unnecessarily providing redundant or incorrect information.

For infoboxes that require reformatting, general cleanup or addition of missing parameters, Template:Infobox Australian place/cleanup can be substituted. This will reformat the infobox and remove invalid parameters.

Usage

To use this template

  1. Copy the relevant blank template from the Blank infobox page into the beginning of your document, remembering to put the code on the line directly before the start of the article's lead.
  2. Enter values for the parameters as outlined under § Parameters, particularly |type= and |state=. Parameters left blank will automatically be hidden.
  3. Preview the page with your edits.
  4. Save the page with an appropriate edit summary (e.g., "Added {{[[Template:Infobox Australian place|Infobox Australian place]]}}", which will display as, "Added {{Infobox Australian place}}" ).

Examples

Parameters

Both type and state are required parameters. All other parameters used by this template are optional.

Required

These parameters must be set for every infobox as they affect the behaviour of many other parameters.

The |type= parameter sets up the template for a specific type of place. It regulates which parameters can be used. The entered values for this parameter should be plain, unlinked text.

Use of the |type= parameter
Accepted value Description
city A city.
suburb A suburb, a form of administrative region generally used in cities and towns.
town A town or other settlement.
lga An Australian local government area (LGA) - a particular form of administrative region, used to create local governments. Many LGAs will use terms such as "Town of", "District Council of", "Shire of", "City of", etc., in their names.

Note that the ACT does not have any system of local government, and therefore does not have LGAs.

region
cadastral
other
undefined Occurs when the parameter has been left blank.

The |state= parameter defines the state or territory of the place. It sets up the template to refer to and link to the correct state or territory throughout. The entered values for this parameter should be plain, unlinked text; for consistency, lower case is preferred. If the parameter is left blank, the infobox will default to au (i.e., Australia).

Use of the |state= parameter
Accepted value State or territory
act Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
nsw New South Wales (NSW)
nt Northern Territory (NT)
qld Queensland (Qld or QLD)
sa South Australia (SA)
tas Tasmania (Tas or TAS)
vic Victoria (Vic or VIC)
wa Western Australia (WA)
jbt Jervis Bay Territory (JBT)
ni Norfolk Island (NI)
au Australia - use when no other value is applicable.

Mapframe map

A second map can be generated by {{Infobox mapframe}}. This map can also function when there are no local |coordinates=, by using those defined at Wikidata. It will display below the § Location map generated by coordinates map.

Wikidata can have a قالب:Wdp property or a قالب:Wdp property attached, allowing this map to show the shape of the local area, in the map thumbnail as well as in the expanded view available after clicking the thumbnail.

Note: if the resulting map is incorrect in any way, especially if it's just a light-blue square, the likely cause is problems with the OpenStreetMap data. See Module talk:Mapframe/FAQ question 4.

Wikidata-generated map
Parameter Available for |type= Description Notes Values
local_map all Enable map of local area, as defined in Wikidata This map will display below the map generated by |coordinates= if that map is also present. For the map to display properly, the current article must be connected to a Wikidata entry which is in turn associated with an OpenStreetMap relation or a geoshape. yes will display the map
zoom all Change zoom size of local_map For more information, see {{Infobox mapframe}} instructions.
Prerequisite parameters:
  • local_map
Numeric value between 1 and 18. If left blank, zoom size defaults to 10.

Plain text or wikitext

For a complete list of available mapframe parameters, please see {{Infobox settlement#Mapframe maps}}.

Notes

Calculating "image_upright"

The |image_upright= parameter, and |image2_upright= and |logo_upright= where applicable, are provided so as to facilitate the use of scalable images in this infobox, in accordance with the instructions at WP:IMAGESIZE, which advises against the use of "px" (for example: thumb|300px), as this forces a fixed image width.

Scalable images respect the user's base preference, which may have been selected for that user's particular devices. Module:InfoboxImage, which is used in this infobox, accommodates the use of scaling. However, setting the appropriate scale is slightly more complex than setting a raw "px" value. This guide provides a quick conversion table to make the process of setting a scale easier. It is based on a default thumbnail setting of 220px.

  • 170px ? upright=0.75
  • 180px ? upright=0.8
  • 190px ? upright=0.85
  • 200px ? upright=0.9
  • 210px ? upright=0.95
  • 220px ? upright=1
  • 230px ? upright=1.05
  • 240px ? upright=1.1
  • 250px ? upright=1.15
  • 260px ? upright=1.2
  • 270px ? upright=1.23
  • 280px ? upright=1.25
  • 290px ? upright=1.3
  • 300px ? upright=1.35

Footnote and reference parameters

Any references to support a parameter reserved solely for a numeric value should be placed within the respective |..._footnotes= or |..._ref= parameters. For example, place the reference used for the area of City X in the |area_footnotes= parameters and not in the |area= parameter. Otherwise, an error may result.

Unformatted numbers and expression errors

Certain parameters require numeric values to be entered in an unformatted/raw fashion—i.e. 1000.0 not 1,000.0. If an expression error is present, simply remove any commas or spaces from the number.

First peoples

Parameters:

  • |first_peoples1=, |first_peoples2=
  • use these parameters where the place is within or immediately surrounded by an area affiliated with a group named in the sources (see below)
  • filling first_peoples2 is valid for large-area places (eg: cities) that have different custodians in different parts, or where affiliation is acknowledged as shared
  • if there are more than 2 groups sharing affiliation to the place, or there is any level of dispute or ambiguity, use 'see {{section link}}' to refer to a discussion of the details within the article, or to link to details elsewhere. If there is no detailed discussion to refer to, and there is any dispute or ambiguity, do not fill these parameters.
  • |first_peoples1_footnotes=, |first_peoples2_footnotes=
Common sources would include:
  • Native Title Determinations under the federal Native Title Act
  • Indigenous Land Use Agreements made under the same act
  • Declared Indigenous Protected Areas
  • Other areas defined under state law (eg: Aboriginal Heritage Acts in various states)
  • State government websites where traditional ownership is formally recognised
  • Anthropological or similar information about pre-european-settlement occupation or current affiliation with the land
Note that acknowledgements of and welcomes to country are not generally regarded as reliable sources for the name(s) of first peoples affiliated with a place.
For quick creation of references for first peoples, the following templates can be used in |first_peoples1_footnotes= and |first_peoples2_footnotes=.
For example, use | first_peoples1_footnotes = <ref>{{FirstPeoplesRefVIC|access-date=2026-04-16}}</ref>.
Template Referenced Site
{{FirstPeoplesRefVIC}} Map of formally recognised Traditional Owners (Victoria)

Dist#, Dir# and Location#

This is the distance and approximate direction from another location. The '#' is replaced with a number between 1 and 5. Therefore, five locations can be listed, using |location1= through |location5=. The distances can be listed using |dist1= through |dist5=. Direction from the locations is optional, and can be specified using |dir1= through |dir5=.

Population from Wikidata

If the |pop= parameter is left empty or not supplied, the template will attempt to retrieve population data from Wikidata. For more information, see the documentation of Module:PopulationFromWikidata.

Microformat

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • "adr"
  • "county-name"
  • "fn"
  • "label"
  • "locality"
  • "nickname"
  • "note"
  • "org"
  • "region"
  • "street-address"
  • "vcard"

Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:

  • "geo"
  • "latitude"
  • "longitude"

Please do not rename or remove these classes.

When giving coordinates, please don't be overly precise.
